Monash Medical Centre Tower Expansion

About this project

Monash Medical Centre will receive a $535 million upgrade to deliver a 7-storey tower above the newly expanded emergency department.

After opening its new emergency department in 2022, Monash Medical Centre will now receive another major expansion, with a seven-storey tower to be built above the newly expanded emergency department.

The new multi-storey tower will be home to a new operating theatre complex with pre- and post-operative beds, a new intensive care unit to care for the sickest patients and expanded maternity services including new birthing suites. The project will also deliver a new central sterile services department, improving the way sterile equipment is managed.

The project will increase capacity for pre- and post-operative and maternity services.

It is expected to be completed by 2029.

When complete in 2029, the new tower will include new operating theatres, an intensive care unit and expanded maternity services.

Engagement with community November- December 2024

Early works July - December 2025
Early works have been completed to prepare for major construction to commence in 2026.
Main works 2026-2029
Construction works have commenced January 2026.
Completion of project
Construction is expected to be completed in 2029.

FAQ

There will be some reallocation of services within the Monash Medical Centre site at Clayton and we will ensure that disruption will be communicated and minimised while construction is underway.

There will be no change for patients accessing the Monash Medical Centre’s emergency department.

Temporary changes to traffic and pedestrian flow for the main entrance from Clayton Road.
Temporary changes to public parking off Dixon Street.
Temporary relocation of the drop-off area for the Monash Children’s Hospital to Fregon Road.
A new taxi/ride share pick up point near McCulloch House.

The main tower will be constructed on top of the existing emergency department, which was designed and constructed specifically to enable this expansion project, boosting capacity at what is our biggest site and busiest emergency department.
